In April, six teenage girls in Florida were arrested for maliciously beating up another girl - a former friend of theirs - and videotaping the incident to post on YouTube. The two male teens who served as lookouts were also arrested.
The victim - 16-year-old Victoria Lindsay - was lured to a house and then beaten for 30 minutes. The beating was allegedly in response to comments Lindsay posted about the girls on MySpace.
"The whole this is pretty ridiculous," said South Charleston High School junior Shane Belcher. "Why would someone use an internet site for violence? If you want to watch violent entertainment, go rent 'Fight Club.'"
"I think it's all really ridiculous," agreed Erin Clark, a sophomore at South Charleston. "I think the girl should have known better and at least went with someone to the house instead of going by herself since they were fighting in the first place."
On the short segment of video played by numerous media outlets, one girl is seen hitting Lindsay and blocking the front door to keep her from leaving. In the background, you can hear the other girls shouting, taunting Lindsay and encouraging each other.
One of the girls warns the attacker, "Don't hit the shelf," and towards the end, the girl taping the fight says, "Make this 17 seconds good!"
Lindsay was beaten so badly, her father says, that he did not even recognize her at the hospital. She suffered a concussion, hearing loss, blurred vision and numerous bruises.
Upon their arrest, the girls showed little remorse for their actions. During their booking, they joked about not being able to go to the beach over spring break, and one even asked if she would be done in time for cheerleading practice.
All of the teens have since been released on bail and are awaiting trial. They have been placed under house arrest.
With the exception of one of the lookouts who is 18, all of the other teens involved are underage. However, they are being tried as adults. They will face charges of kidnapping and battery. They could face up to life in prison.
