Two very popular words that describe West Virginia are Almost Heaven. This phrase is seen on bumper stickers on many West Virginia cars, and on some with Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and other out-of-state license plates as well.
West Virginia is no doubt a very beautiful and colorful state. The state offers different kinds of recreation, from hiking and rock climbing in the summer to snowboarding and skiing in the winter. The Mountain States rugged terrain provides excitement for those who seek adventure, as well as beauty for those who would rather take pictures than climb, bike or hike the trails.
In an informal survey, people at Nicholas County High School revealed their favorite West Virginia leisure activities.
When I have free time, I like to go camping with friends and family, or take a walk to let my mind go free, junior Rebecca Lilly said.
Teacher/librarian Vicki Lucas said she makes it a family affair. We like to visit state parks and go swimming and snow tubing. We have been to Canaan Valley and Pipestem, and we love going to the French Creek Game Farm.
Nicholas County High students also enjoy places such as Summersville Lake, where they can jump off the rocks. Snowshoe Mountain Resort and Winterplace are popular with those who love sports that involve snow.
Junior Koley Craytor does not care much for snow, so she prefers summer and warm-weather activities. I like to go four-wheeling after its been raining really hard, you know, so it will be nice and muddy, she said.
The next time you are bored and tell your parents there is nothing to do, consider trying something new. West Virginia has many ways to keep you entertained. Whether its doing something with friends or family or by yourself, youll find that West Virginia has something for everyone.
